What does a perfect summer’s day in the Dolomites look like?
Some days stay with you for years. Today, we’re taking you along for a perfect summer’s day out in Val Gardena. That’s what they call it over on Instagram – POV, isn’t it?
A taste of happiness to kick off your day in the Dolomites
Fil da Mont, just after 7. The scent of coffee hangs in the air. A ray of sunshine streams through the window. You’re enjoying a breakfast that’s truly worthy of the name: fruity jams, South Tyrolean speck, fresh eggs cooked to your liking, bread from the bakery round the corner, fruit and yoghurts that taste of childhood.
Take the first gondola to the Langkofel circuit
Less than an hour later, you’re ready: today you’re set to tackle part of the legendary Langkofel Circuit. Step out of the hotel – just a few steps away – and the Piz Seteur gondola lift will take you up to the midway station. There, you’ll change to the Gran Paradiso chairlift, which bears its name for good reason. You’ll see why!
Through the Stone City to the Comici Hut
It’s early morning and you can’t stop marvelling at the views. You could actually just stop, look and be amazed. But behind the next fork in the path, even more wonders of the Dolomites await – I promise! This is where one of the most beautiful circular walks in the Dolomites begins. The trail takes you through the ‘Stone City’ – a bizarre labyrinth of massive boulders that the Langkofel hurled down into the valley in ancient times. The walk is of moderate difficulty, well signposted and suitable for anyone with sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness.
After half an hour’s walk, the moment you’ve been looking forward to back home finally arrives: the Emilio Comici Hut, situated on a saddle between Piz Sella and the north-east face of the Sassolungo. The Comici Hut is part of the Fil da Mont family, and here they cook the sort of food we love – served with a glass of champagne. If you fancy a more challenging hike, there’s a loop across the alpine meadows towards Sasso Piatto – or you could explore one of the longer routes, such as the legendary Sassolungo Circuit (starting from Sellajoch, approx. 15 km, 4:30 h).
Back at Fil da Mont: cake, deckchair, a break
For the return journey, you have a choice: you can either take the same route back or head down via the alpine pastures towards Plan de Gralba. When you arrive at Fil da Mont in the afternoon, you’ll be treated to homemade cake, freshly baked pastries and coffee. You can sit out on the terrace, put your feet up and enjoy the Val Gardena mountain summer to the full. Before dinner, featuring a 4-course menu of your choice, you’ll still have plenty of time to sunbathe on the alpine meadow or enjoy a beauty sleep in your favourite room.
And tomorrow: Ommm and Ahhh! in the Dolomites
If you’re staying with us during the week, you can look forward to two special treats: on Thursdays, our hiking guide Alberto will take you to his absolute favourite spots in the region.
And every Friday morning, the day begins not with the lift, but with yoga. A 25-minute walk takes you through forests scented with pine resin, up to the hotel’s private alpine hut. There, you’ll enjoy a gentle Hatha yoga session suitable for all levels – with a view of the Langkofel. Afterwards, there’s a refreshing drink and a moment for conversation and reflection before heading back to the hotel.
