Cookies
Definitions, Characteristics, and Applicability of the Legislation
Cookies are small text files that websites visited by the user send to and store on the user's computer or mobile device, to be sent back to the same websites on subsequent visits. Cookies allow a website to remember the user’s actions and preferences (such as login data, chosen language, font size, and other display settings) so that these do not have to be re-entered every time the user returns to the website or navigates between pages on the same site. Cookies are therefore used for tasks such as user authentication, session tracking, and storing information about users’ activities on a website. They may also contain a unique identification code that allows tracking of the user's navigation within the website for statistical or advertising purposes. While browsing a website, users may also receive cookies from other websites or web servers (so-called “third-party cookies”). Certain functions of a website cannot be performed without the use of cookies, which are therefore, in some cases, technically necessary for the website to operate properly. There are different types of cookies, depending on their characteristics and functions, and they may be stored on the user's device for varying periods of time: so-called "session cookies", which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed, and "persistent cookies", which remain on the user’s device until a predetermined expiration date.
Under current Italian legislation, the use of cookies does not always require the user’s express consent.
In particular, "technical cookies", i.e. those used solely for the purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user, do not require such consent. In other words, these are cookies that are essential for the proper functioning of the website or necessary to perform activities requested by the user.
Among the technical cookies that do not require prior express consent, the Italian Data Protection Authority (see the Provision "Individuation of simplified methods to provide information and obtain consent for the use of cookies" dated 8 May 2014, and subsequent clarifications, hereinafter only "Provision") also includes:
- the “analytics cookies”, when used directly by the website operator to collect aggregate information on the number of users and how they visit the site;
- the “browsing or session cookies” (e.g., for user authentication);
- the “functional cookies”, which allow users to navigate according to a set of selected criteria (such as language or products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user.
Conversely, “profiling cookies”—i.e., cookies aimed at creating user profiles and used to send advertising messages in line with the user’s browsing preferences—require the user’s prior consent.
Types of Cookies Used on the Website and Options for (De-)Selection
The website uses the following cookies, which can be deselected except for third-party cookies, for which you will have to refer directly to the relevant cookie selection and deselection procedures provided via links:
- Technical navigation or session cookies that are strictly necessary for the operation of the website or to allow you to use the requested content and services.
- Functional cookies, which are used to enable specific features of the website and a series of selected criteria (for example, language) in order to improve the service provided.
Note: By disabling technical and/or functional cookies, the website may be unavailable, or certain services or features of the website may not function properly. You might be required to manually enter or modify certain information or preferences each time you visit the website.
- Third-party cookies, i.e., cookies from sites or web servers other than HS’s, used for purposes of these said third parties. Please note that these third parties, listed below with the relevant links to their privacy policies, are typically independent data controllers of the data collected through the cookies they serve. Therefore, you will have to refer to their personal data processing policies, disclosures, and consent forms (including cookie selection and deselection), as specified in the aforementioned Provision.
For completeness, it is also specified that HS makes every effort to track the cookies on its website. These are regularly updated in the table below, where we provide transparency about the cookies directly sent by HS and their purposes. Concerning third parties who send cookies through our website, we provide below the links to their respective privacy policies. Responsibility for providing information and obtaining your consent lies, as already mentioned, with these third parties. This responsibility applies not only to cookies directly set by the third parties but also to any additional cookies sent through our website by virtue of using services provided by those third parties.
HS has no control over these cookies, which are sent by service providers of the aforementioned third parties, and is unaware of their characteristics or purposes.
