What does a perfect summer’s day in the Dolomites look like?

Some days stay in your heart for years. Today, we’re taking you along for a perfect summer holiday in Val Gardena. POV, as they call it over on Instagram, right?

A little taste of happiness to start your day in the Dolomites

Fil da Mont, just after 7 am. The aroma of coffee fills the air. A ray of sunshine streams through the window. You settle down to a breakfast worthy of the name: fruity jams, South Tyrolean speck, fresh eggs cooked just the way you like them, bread from the local bakery, and fruit and yoghurt that taste just like childhood.

Take the first gondola for the Sassolungo circuit

Less than an hour later, you’re ready to go. Today, you’re planning to tackle part of the legendary Sassolungo circuit. Step outside the hotel, walk just a few metres and the Piz Seteur cable car carries you up to the mid-station. You change onto the chairlift Gran Paradiso, which has certainly earned its name. You’ll soon see why!

Through the Città dei Sassi to Rifugio Comici hut

It’s still early morning, and you can hardly believe your eyes. You could happily stop, gaze around and marvel at the scenery. But we promise there are even more wonders of the Dolomites waiting just beyond the next fork in the trail! This is the starting point for one of the most beautiful circular walks in the Dolomites. The route takes you through the Città dei Sassi – a surreal maze of mighty boulders that Sassolungo hurled into the valley aeons ago. The hike is moderately challenging, well signposted and suitable for anyone with sturdy walking boots and a reasonable level of fitness.

After half an hour of walking, the moment you’ve been looking forward to at home finally arrives: the Rifugio Emilio Comici perched on a saddle between Piz Sella and the north-eastern face of Sassolungo. Rifugio Comici is part of the Fil da Mont family, and here we serve the things we love most – accompanied, of course, by a glass of champagne. If you’re feeling energetic, add a detour across the alpine meadows towards Sasso Piatto. Or take on a longer route, such as the legendary Sassolungo circuit (from Passo Sella, approx. 15 km, 4:30 hrs).

Back at Fil da Mont: cake, sun lounger and time to unwind

You have two options for the return journey: retrace your steps or descend along the alpine trails towards Plan de Gralba. When you arrive back at Fil da Mont in the afternoon, homemade cakes, freshly baked treats and coffee will be waiting for you. Settle down on the terrace, put your feet up and savour the summer in the mountains of Val Gardena. Before dinner, with a choice of 4-courses there’s still plenty of time to soak up the sun on the alpine meadow or enjoy a restorative nap in your favourite room.

And tomorrow: Ooooh and Ahhh! in the Dolomites

If you’re with us during the week, you can look forward to two special highlights: on Thursdays our hiking guide Alberto takes you to his absolute favourite places in the region.

And every Friday morning the day doesn’t start with a lift, but with yoga. A walk of around 25 minutes leads you through resin-scented woods up to the hotel’s private mountain hut. There, a gentle Hatha yoga session for all levels – with the Sassolungo as your backdrop. Afterwards, refresh yourself with a drink and take a moment to chat and reflect before heading back to the hotel.
